Cable Knowledge
What Is LSZH Cable and When Is It Needed?
LSZH describes smoke and halogen characteristics of cable materials under specified fire tests. It does not by itself mean the cable resists flame spread, maintains circuit operation in fire or suits every outdoor environment.
Why Projects Specify LSZH
Dense smoke can obstruct evacuation and corrosive gases can damage equipment. Tunnels, transport systems, public buildings, data centres and enclosed facilities may therefore specify low smoke and halogen-free cables.
Relevant Performance Categories
Flame propagation tests evaluate spread under defined conditions. Halogen acid-gas tests assess corrosive emissions, and smoke-density tests measure light transmission. Circuit-integrity tests evaluate continued operation during fire. These results are not interchangeable.
Trade-offs
LSZH compounds can have different flexibility, abrasion resistance, water absorption and processing characteristics from PVC. The complete cable should be evaluated for its real installation environment.
How to Specify
- Required flame-propagation test
- Halogen acid-gas limit
- Smoke-density requirement
- Circuit-integrity requirement, if any
- Indoor, outdoor or wet service
- Required approvals and reports
What LSZH Does Not Prove
An LSZH material claim alone does not establish flame category, circuit integrity, outdoor life or mechanical durability. Ask for the exact smoke and halogen tests and then specify other required properties separately.
- Do not equate halogen-free with fire-resistant.
- Review complete cable test reports.
- Confirm environmental suitability of the sheath.
Information to Confirm
- Project fire strategy
- Exact test standards and acceptance criteria
- Cable voltage and construction
- Mechanical and environmental duty
- Required type-test evidence
- Marking and document requirements
Engineering note: Do not use LSZH, flame-retardant and fire-resistant as synonyms.
