How to Choose Rubber Flexible Cable or Welding Cable
Flexible rubber cable and welding cable are designed for demanding movement, but the names do not define identical voltage ratings or applications. Select the cable from its standard, conductor class, sheath and duty cycle.
Application and Movement
Portable tools, cranes, pumps, construction equipment and welding machines impose different movement. State whether the cable flexes occasionally, continuously, reels, twists or drags.
Welding Duty
Welding current is often intermittent. Conductor size depends on current, duty cycle, one-way lead length, allowable voltage drop and ambient temperature. Connections must remain tight and protected from damage.
Sheath Selection
Rubber-family sheaths can be formulated for weather, oil and mechanical resistance, but performance varies. State the contaminants, temperature range and outdoor exposure rather than asking only for 'rubber cable'.
Handling and Inspection
Observe minimum bending radius and pulling limits. Inspect for cuts, crushed areas, exposed conductor and overheating near connectors. Remove damaged portable cable from service according to site procedure.
Specify Movement, Not Just Flexibility
A cable that bends during installation is not necessarily designed for continuous reeling or torsion. Describe bend frequency, radius, travel speed and exposure so the conductor class and sheath can be evaluated for the actual motion.
- State intermittent or continuous flexing.
- Check connector heating on welding leads.
- Inspect dragged cable for cuts and crushing.
