Flame-Retardant vs Fire-Resistant vs LSZH Cable
Cable fire terminology is often misused in inquiries. Flame-retardant cable limits flame spread, fire-resistant cable is intended to maintain circuit function for a test duration, and LSZH addresses smoke and halogen emissions.
Flame Retardancy
Flame tests evaluate how a cable or cable bunch propagates flame under defined burner conditions. Passing does not mean the cable remains operational during a fire.
Fire Resistance
Circuit-integrity tests expose cable to fire, sometimes with mechanical shock or water, while monitoring electrical continuity. The exact test and duration must be stated.
Low Smoke and Halogen-Free
Smoke-density and acid-gas tests address visibility and corrosive emissions. They do not alone establish flame spread or circuit integrity.
Procurement Wording
Avoid descriptions such as 'fireproof LSZH cable' without standards. List every required test, classification and report so supplier offers can be compared.
Write Three Separate Lines in the Specification
If a project needs all three properties, list flame-spread classification, smoke/halogen criteria and circuit-integrity test with duration independently. This prevents a supplier from answering one broad fire claim with evidence for only one property.
- Name each test standard.
- State classification or duration.
- Require reports for the offered construction.
Information to Confirm
- Fire risk and required circuit function
- Flame test and category
- Circuit-integrity test and duration
- Smoke and halogen criteria
- Cable construction and environment
- Required reports and approvals
Engineering note: Fire cable selection must be coordinated with the project's fire engineer and authority requirements.
