How to Read Cable Markings and Technical Data Sheets

Cable markings and data sheets provide traceability, but abbreviations vary by country and manufacturer. Buyers should compare the full construction rather than relying on one familiar model code.

Core Identification

A designation may state number of cores and nominal cross-section, such as 4 x 35 mm2. Protective conductors, reduced neutrals and individually screened pairs require clearer schedules.

Construction Data

Review conductor class, nominal insulation and sheath thickness, approximate outer diameter, mass, bending radius, tensile limit and temperature range.

Electrical Data

Important values include maximum conductor resistance, voltage rating, insulation properties and, for signal cable, capacitance, impedance or attenuation where applicable.

Traceability

Markings may include manufacturer, model, voltage, standard, production code and metre count. Drum labels should link the delivered length to test and inspection records.

A Nameplate-Style Review

Before approval, ask whether a technician receiving one drum could identify its voltage, construction, size, standard, manufacturer and batch without opening project emails. If not, improve the printing and label schedule.

Approve a marking sample.
Link batch code to test records.
Avoid ambiguous local abbreviations on export orders.
