Cable Installation: Bending Radius, Pulling and Storage
Many cable failures begin during transport or installation. Drum handling, bend radius, pulling tension, sidewall pressure, temperature and end sealing should be controlled using manufacturer data and an installation plan.
Drum Storage
Store drums upright on firm ground, chock them and protect cable ends. Avoid uncontrolled rolling, flange damage and prolonged standing water.
Route Preparation
Inspect conduits, rollers, bends and tray edges. Calculate pulling tension and sidewall pressure for long or complex routes. Use suitable pulling eyes, stockings and lubricant.
Temperature and Bend Radius
Cold cable can be less flexible. Follow the minimum installation temperature and bending radius for the actual construction, especially armoured or screened cable.
Post-Installation Checks
Inspect the sheath, verify phasing and identification, complete specified electrical tests and seal entries. Record installed drum numbers and route data for maintenance.
Plan the Hardest Bend Before Pulling
The final bend near switchgear often controls pulling tension, sidewall pressure and minimum radius. Model the complete route and terminal approach instead of checking only the long straight section.
- Position rollers before the pull begins.
- Monitor pulling force where required.
- Inspect and test after installation.
Information to Confirm
