Medium-Voltage Cable Buying Guide
Medium-voltage cable is a coordinated insulation system, not simply a thicker low-voltage cable. Cable, joints, terminations, grounding and system studies must be selected together.
Voltage and Insulation System
Specify rated voltage using the notation required by the governing standard and confirm maximum system voltage and grounding. XLPE insulation is commonly used, with semiconductive conductor and insulation screens.
Metallic Screen and Water Protection
Copper wires or tape provide screening and may carry earth-fault current. Their area and bonding arrangement require calculation. Water-blocking layers and sheath choice depend on route conditions.
Accessories
Joints and terminations must match conductor size, insulation diameter, screen construction and equipment interface. Installation workmanship is critical to electric-field control.
Testing and Delivery
Specify routine and type-test evidence, drum lengths, pulling limits and any after-installation testing. Keep ends sealed and prevent bending or impact damage.
Accessories Are Part of the Cable System
An MV cable can pass factory tests yet fail early if the termination does not match insulation diameter or screen construction. Include approved accessory data, installer competence and after-installation testing in the procurement plan.
