Cable Knowledge

What Information Is Needed for a Cable Quotation?

Cable is normally made and priced against a technical specification. The fastest quotation is not the one with the fewest details; it is the one that clearly defines construction, quantity, inspection and delivery scope.

Minimum Technical Data

  • Cable model or intended application
  • Rated voltage and system type
  • Copper or aluminium conductor
  • Number of cores and cross-sectional area
  • Insulation, screen, armour and sheath requirements
  • Operating environment and installation method

Commercial Data

State total length by size, preferred drum length, acceptable length tolerance, destination port and Incoterm. Indicate whether the request is for a budget estimate, tender or purchase order.

Copper-sensitive quotations normally have a validity period. Compare offers issued on similar dates and confirm whether freight, drums, inspection, documents and taxes are included.

Documents and Inspection

List required data sheets, drawings, routine test reports, certificates, declarations and third-party inspection before the supplier prices the order. Late document requests can affect cost and schedule.

Where a project specification is available, attach the complete relevant section instead of sending isolated screenshots.

When the Cable Specification Is Not Yet Confirmed

Describe the load, voltage, route length, installation method, temperature, movement, oil or sunlight exposure and destination country. The supplier can propose a cable construction for review, but the project engineer remains responsible for final selection.

Example of a Quote-Ready Inquiry

Instead of asking for '3-core copper cable', state: 0.6/1 kV, 3 x 95 mm2 copper, XLPE insulation, specified sheath and armour, IEC construction, total length, drum schedule, installation environment, destination and required documents. Suppliers can then disclose deviations rather than invent assumptions.

  • One line item should describe one construction.
  • Attach a cable schedule when several sizes are needed.
  • Request unit price, total price and included scope separately.

Information to Confirm

  1. Model, voltage, cores and conductor size
  2. Standard and special performance requirements
  3. Quantity by item and drum length
  4. Application and installation environment
  5. Inspection and document list
  6. Incoterm, destination and requested delivery

Engineering note: A commercial quotation should never replace electrical design verification.
