How Do Copper Price and Quantity Affect Cable Price?
Conductor metal is a major part of cable cost, but a professional quotation also includes insulation, sheath, shielding, armour, manufacturing, tests, drums and logistics. Comparing only price per metre can hide important scope differences.
Metal Content
Larger conductors and multicore cables use more copper or aluminium. Conductor class and compacting affect geometry, while maximum resistance requirements help control electrical performance.
Construction Cost
Insulation thickness, individual screens, braids, metallic tapes, armour, water blocking and special sheaths add material and process stages. Certified or special compounds may have minimum purchasing quantities.
Order and Packing Effects
Short runs create more setup and scrap per metre. Numerous custom drum lengths increase handling. Export drums, fumigation, container loading and destination freight must be clearly included or excluded.

- Same conductor material and resistance
- Same nominal size and length tolerance
- Same insulation, sheath, shield and armour
- Same standard and tests
- Same drum and delivery term
- Same quotation validity date
Normalize Prices Before Comparing
Convert offers to the same delivered length, drum scope, metal basis and Incoterm. Then review conductor resistance and construction. A price per metre is misleading if one quotation excludes drums or allows a different length tolerance.
- Record quotation date and validity.
- Separate metal adjustment from conversion cost.
- Confirm net length rather than package count.
