How to Choose Solar PV Cable for a Photovoltaic Project
PV string cable operates outdoors for long periods under DC voltage, sunlight and temperature cycling. Correct cable and connector selection helps limit losses, insulation failure and overheating at terminations.
Electrical Sizing
Use the design current, required multipliers, grouping and ambient temperature prescribed by the project rules. Long strings may require a larger conductor to control voltage drop and energy loss.
Environmental Duty
Rooftops and solar farms expose cable to UV, heat, cold, water and movement. Cable should be supported away from sharp edges and standing water. Avoid loose loops that abrade on roofing or lie on the ground.
Standards and Construction
IEC 62930 is one reference for electric cables used with photovoltaic systems. Projects may require other regional standards or approvals. Confirm conductor, insulation, sheath, temperature and voltage ratings together.
Connectors and Installation
Use compatible connectors, approved tools and documented crimping procedures. Mixing connector families or poor crimping can create high-resistance joints even when the cable itself is correctly sized.
Loss and Reliability Are Connected
Increasing conductor size can reduce voltage drop, but poor connector compatibility or unsupported rooftop routing can still dominate failure risk. Treat cable, connector, crimping and mechanical support as one DC circuit.
- Calculate the hottest credible operating condition.
- Avoid mixed connector families unless explicitly approved.
- Keep cables off sharp edges and standing water.
