Copper Cable or Aluminum Cable: Which Should I Buy?
Copper and aluminium conductors can both be suitable when the cable and connection system are designed for them. The decision should compare complete installed performance, not metal price per kilogram alone.
Electrical Comparison
Copper has higher conductivity, so a copper conductor is generally smaller than an aluminium conductor for comparable resistance and current duty. Actual equivalence must be checked using the cable standard and design calculation.
Mechanical and Installation Effects
Aluminium cable can reduce weight and may simplify handling on long runs, but its larger diameter affects conduit fill, bending radius, trays and terminations. Copper is more compact and often preferred where space is limited.
Connections Matter
Use lugs and terminals identified for the conductor material and size. Surface preparation, oxide control, tightening method and inspection should follow the equipment and connector instructions. Mixed-metal interfaces require suitable approved hardware.
Commercial Comparison
Compare cable cost, supports, tray size, pulling effort, terminations, losses and maintenance. A lower initial cable price may not produce the lowest installed or lifetime cost.
Compare the Installed System
If aluminium requires a larger cable, verify that switchgear lugs, glands, bend space and tray capacity still work. The useful comparison includes cable losses and termination labour, not only conductor purchase price.
- Check equipment terminals for conductor material.
- Include connector and oxide-control requirements.
- Do not substitute at equal cross-section without calculation.
