Can Cable Be Used Outdoors, Underground or in Wet Locations?
Outdoor, wet and underground are different service descriptions. A cable suitable for sunlight may not be approved for continuous immersion, and an armoured cable may still need moisture protection.
Outdoor Exposure
Sunlight, ozone, temperature cycling and standing water age cable sheaths. Confirm UV and weather resistance for the applicable product standard and use supports that do not damage the sheath.
Underground Routes
Soil, stones, settlement, rodents and excavation create mechanical risk. Burial depth, warning tape, ducts, sand bedding and armour are installation design choices. Cable ampacity also depends on soil thermal conditions.
Water Ingress
Moisture can travel along conductor strands or screens after sheath damage. Longitudinal or radial water barriers may be specified for critical circuits. Seal cable ends during storage and installation.
Inspection and Maintenance
Inspect route drainage, joint pits, glands and sheath condition. Electrical tests cannot always identify every future water-ingress risk, so mechanical installation quality is essential.
Describe Water Exposure Precisely
Rain on a supported outdoor cable, condensation in conduit, occasional flooding and continuous immersion are not the same duty. The word 'waterproof' is too broad for a reliable specification.
- State duration and pressure of water exposure.
- Seal cable ends during storage.
- Select joints and glands for the same environment as the cable.
