Cable Knowledge
IEC Cable vs UL and NEC Requirements
IEC standards and North American requirements use different product designations and compliance systems. A cable made to an IEC construction is not automatically acceptable for a US installation, and a UL mark must be checked for its exact product category and use.
Product and Installation Rules
Product standards define cable construction and tests. Installation codes define where and how listed wiring methods may be used. NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, is a key US reference, subject to local adoption and amendments.
Certification Scope
A certification mark should be verified against the manufacturer, product type, voltage, temperature and intended use. A certified raw material or component does not certify the finished cable.
Model Equivalence
IEC, GB and North American designations are not one-to-one translations. Compare conductor, insulation, voltage, flame category, wet rating, raceway use and markings.
RFQ Strategy
State destination country, authority requirements and required certification at the beginning. Ask for documentary evidence before accepting the commercial offer.
Destination Comes Before Model Translation
For a US project, first establish the permitted wiring method and listing requirement. Only then compare an overseas model. A similar conductor and insulation description does not prove that inspectors can accept the cable.
- Ask the project engineer for the adopted code basis.
- Verify the certification database entry.
- Review printed cable markings before production.
Information to Confirm
- Destination and local code edition
- Permitted wiring method
- Required listing or approval
- Voltage, temperature and wet rating
- Cable marking requirements
- Certificate database verification
Engineering note: The local authority having jurisdiction makes final acceptance decisions.
